Week#3 – Assignment#2
Subtraction cutting by Julian Roberts
Subtraction cutting is a method of hollow construction developed and taught by Julian Roberts to accessories interior/ exterior products. ‘Hollow Construction’ is also known as ‘Subtraction Cutting’. This method make the most of the negative spaces that can be opened up in fabric and falls somewhere between traditional pattern making and drape resulting in experimental garments that break the boundaries of the usual garment shapes. – thecuttingclass.com
It is about designing with patterns rather than creating patterns with designs. It is a creation of removing of fabric, not addition of fabric. The removal creates space for the body, but also controls how the fabric falls around the body.
The assignment is to have one final outfit using the subtraction technique with another two garment that is for experimenting. The first exercise is using two different colour fabrics but the same weight while the second exercise uses jersey.
